The Gemstone Axe

The Gemstone Axe was a project to challenge myself by painting a prop in a highly stylized way. It is designed to be able to be 3D modeled in the future.

Before I started the project, I did quick studies of axes with a variety of different handles, axe heads, and silhouettes. I also wanted to decide what would influence texture differences in the design, so I drew out some select materials to start with.

I did more studies breaking down how to render in a stylized way. I created a few color jitter brushes to introduce various undertones that make the piece feel more alive. I also did a study of a simple, wooden plank to understand how to render in this way.

Finally, I put the whole idea together!
